How do I fix air conditioning in a 1998 Chevy Express Conversion Van?

I bought a 1998 Chevy Express Conversion Van used, there is no warranty. The vents will only blow out hot air. The warmer it is outside, the warmer the air blows out. It does not need refrigerant because we put in as much as it would take. A repair shop said some flap is either open or shut and to get to it they would have to remove all kinds of stuff out of the way in the engine. Is this true? How can I do it myself since I am low on funds and the summer heat is here. Thanks.

Got something to say?

Doesnt sound like a vent to me, is more like the A/C compressor, run the engine with the AC on and look for the AC compressor clicking on and off, if its not, thats the problem, another thing is if the connections to the pump is too dirty the clutch on it will not turn and off.
those flaps are under the dash, your mode door actuator is probably bad i dont think you have to take much off the engine but it is a heck of a job to get to them, good luck!
errr….did you set the valve to cold?
Okay, I might be sounding an idiot. But yes, your serviceman says right, some valve might either be open or shut.
According to what you said (the warmer it is , the warmer the air blows out), it might seem that your a/c might not be working, or it is only the blower that is working, fetching the outside air in and sending it out through the a/c outlet. Your compressor might not be working, that turns hot air cold.
You’ll have to have that checked. There is no need to move all engine components out of the way unless your compressor is working fine.
you say “we” put R134 in it…did we check the high and low side with a gauge????…may be a door problem but may b compresser ,,evaporator,,condenser…..If its the door problem you may have to remove dash….get a pro to look at it before you decide what to do…
